Country tunes from the wild, wild West
With the 2011 WAMi Award for Best Country Music Act resting comfortably on the mantelpiece, Perth sextet (and relative newcomers) Ruby Boots have launched their second EP – At Last. Alt-country seems to be making a resurgence at the moment, but there’s more ‘trad’ than ‘alt’ about this release; from the opening banjo/violin pairing of Devil to the lap-steel, gentle honky-tonk keys and tale of romantic breakdown in Baby. That’s not to say this is a straight-up country record. There is a thread of folk rock woven throughout and it’s particularly evident in the hand-claps and ‘ooh-ooh’s of Things. However you want to label it though, this is well-crafted music from a talented group of people. It is easy to imagine a dusty old saloon where frontwoman Bex Chilcott croons away, almost effortlessly, with one of the best bands in the West. It’s hard, however, to stop your feet from tapping along.
